Pakistani Mastiff – The Bully Kutta

The Pakistani mastiff or Bully Kutta is known as “”Beast from the East.” It is too much of dog and is not recommended for novice dog owners. Even the experienced dog owners should firstly make themselves mentally prepared before buying this breed.

This giant dog is incredibly powerful, strong headed and dominant. Establishing leadership over the dog is imperative to be safe around it. With proper socialization, training and exercise, it makes adorable companion to person who loves domesticate wild animals.

The main purpose of this dog is to provide protection. They are widely used guard dogs in Asian countries including India and Bangladesh. The dog should be taught to respect human and humans are the ones who make decision. In this way only sweet relationship between a dog and man can be established.

This breed has unique appearance because of its distinctive skin. Its skin is loose, thin but tough. They are heavily boned, despite that they have quick reflex. Obviously, the dog requires spacious surrounding to live in, else it will feel suffocated. The exercise needs of the dog are not so demanding. They should be taken on regular walks to fulfill their primary instinct of walking.

Bully Kutta Origin

There are many speculations made about the origin of this breed. The most legit theory is that the breed belongs to sub-continent of India-Pakistan. The breed was developed when British acquired land of India-Pakistan and brought with themselves Mastiff breeds, Bull Terrier and other breeds.

These breed cross mated with local breeds of India and Pakistan and the “bully kutta” was developed. Pakistan mastiff was used in number of activities like guarding, hunting, watching the territory etc.

Bully Kutta Appearance

The Pakistan mastiff is a giant breed with heavily built up muscular body. The bones of the dog are quite heavy which gives it giant appearance. The skin near the dog’s jaw and neck area is loose, thin but hard which gives it unique appearance.

The dog has a deep and bulging chest and leveled topline. Their jaw is strong and broad with scissors teeth which are capable of ripping flesh of enemy or prey. The gait of the dog is that of a lion. The face of the dog is wide with tapered muzzle. The tail is thick at the starting and gets thin towards the end. This breed has deep brisket and hanging ears.

  • Size and Weight

The ideal size of the dog is 81-101 cm and average weight is 68-77 kg irrespective of gender.

  • Coat and Color

This breed has short and smooth coat which lies close to its body. The dog comes in many colors like white, fawn, harlequin, tan, black and red.

Bully Kutta Temperament

  1. Personality – The dog makes outstanding companion to responsible owners who know how to take care of its health and happiness. It is a noble and reserved breed and will make no efforts to woo its master. This breed thinks if someone wants attention, then they should come to the dog to seek it. It is extremely intelligent and may not always listen to master’s command. Treat the dog gently else it may go defensive and aggressive. This dog can be dangerous for timid dog owners.
  2. Behavior – The dog tends to be dominant in nature. If the animal is raised with this breed, it considers them as the part of family but to other stray animals they tend to be bossy and hostile. They are good with family kids but because of their large size and moody behavior, kids should interact with dog under adult supervision. This dog is also possessive in nature so not a good choice for toddlers. The dog tends to be naturally protective of its family members. If they suspect threat then they will react first and then ask question later. Owning this breed increases your legal responsibility as if the dog harms any person or animal, you will be the one facing the consequences. It is also attentive and watchful and makes vigilant watchdog.
  3. Activities Requirements – The exercise needs of this breed is primate. All dogs have a natural instinct to walk. Same with this breed. Half an hour walk is enough for it.
  4. Trainability – You need to teach your dog “order of pack”. This means make your dog understand that human is the “Alpha” and decision maker. No matter the size, a dog comes last in the order of pack. Start its training as soon as bring puppy to home.

Feeding

Recommended daily food is 4 cups divided into two regular meals. Feeding depends on age, a puppy of 8-12 weeks eats four meals a day and serve three meals between 3-6 months, takes two meals between 6-12 months and one meal for the dog above one year.

Provide them with high-quality dry food mixed with water or canned food or broth. Follow the diet of 40% meat, 30% vegetables, and 30% starch. It will prefer organ meat such as kidney and liver. Provide them nutritious foods like fruits, vegetables, cottage cheese, cooked eggs, etc. Keep clean water around the dog all the time.

The lifespan of Bully Kutta is up to 8-10 years.

Health Issues

Bully Kutta is a large-sized breed prone to common health issues faced by large breeds like bloat, arthritis, hip and elbow dysplasia, etc. It may also suffer from Blindness at the later stage of life. It is not a hypoallergenic breed.

Grooming

The dog is easy to groom. It sheds less so brush its coat once a week. The dog need to be bath once when it starts emitting doggie’s odor. The lose skin of the dog should be wiped with warm water to avoid fungal infection. Trim its nails if it doesn’t wear it naturally. The dog’s ears are prone to infection so clean it monthly with vet approved solution. Brush its teeth once a week to avoid bad smell from its mouth and tartar buildup.

Habitat

The dog requires a house accompanied by the yard to wander freely because of its large size and activeness. It is not advised to keep this dog in an apartment for this reason. It can tolerate any harsh environment and climate.
