Parson Russell Terrier – Dog Breed Information

The Parson Russell Terrier is a small sized terrier dog breed originated in England. The name was given to the dog after Reverend John Jack Russell. In the year 1997, it was called as the Jack Russell Terrier in America when it was recognized, and then the name was changed to its present name in the UK in the year 1999. Later the present name was continued in all the international kennel clubs.

The Parson Russell Terrier dog – Facts & Characteristics

  • The other names for this dog are Parson, Parson Jack Russell Terrier and Jack Russell Terrier (for some period in between 1997 to 2003).

Appearance

The Parson Russell Terrier is small in size with a strong rectangular muzzle. It has a black nose with medium sized eyes and v-shaped ears which are folded forward towards the eyes. The dog has straight and strong legs and the tail is medium in length.

The coat of the dog can be seen in smooth and rough, sometimes the coat comes in broken (between smooth and rough). Generally this dog comes in white color with tan, black or brown shadings. The height of the dog is about 12 – 14 inches (31 – 36 cm) whereas the weight is up to 14 – 18 lb (6 – 8 kg).

Behavior

This dog is said to be energetic, intelligent and obedient. It likes to play with the kids, but the owners should supervise the dog whenever it is with the smaller kids and do not let the children to handle it roughly. This dog become obedient towards owners in a short time and entertains the family. The dog is courageous and is a good companion for the owners.

Health Issues

In general, the Parson Russell Terrier dogs are healthy and fit, but it too has common health disorders. It may prone to primary lens luxation (inherited), deafness and patella luxation. Some of the dogs are prone to Legg Perthes disease and kneecaps dislocation.

Parson Russell Terrier Diet

This dog should be fed with high quality dog food and clean drinking water. It is advisable for owners to prepare a proper food schedule for the dog so that over feeding can be avoided. As it is very energetic and playful, it likes to eat in a short interval but owners should take a proper care in feeding to avoid obesity.

Parson Russell Terrier Habitat

This dog can be suitable for the apartments but it should be provided with regular exercise. A small-sized yard will be best suitable for the dog as it likes to play all the time. It will be active in the indoors too.

Lifestyle

The Parson Russell Terrier should be taken out for daily long walks or brisk walk to keep it active. If the dog is sufficiently exercised then it will be very active and energetic. Do not leave the dog alone for more time in the apartments as it may become dull and inactive.

Lifecycle

The Parson Russell Terrier dog will grow soon and becomes ready for the reproduction. On an average, this dog can give birth to 4 to 8 puppies, the small puppies should be raised with good care.

Predators

As this dog is a terrier breed, it is strong and energetic. But due to its small size it may possess danger from other big animals. So, whenever it is on for the daily walks, owners should rest an eye on the dog all the time.

Parson Russell Terrier Breeding

In order to get the healthy and fit puppies, the breeding should be done by the professional. The dog must attain the proper age for the breeding. In case of any unusual symptoms or emergencies, the owners should consult the vet.

Life Span

The Parson Russell Terrier dog can live up to 15 years or sometimes even more. The average lifespan of the dog is about 14 to 15 years. These dogs sometimes live more than the expectancy if proper care is taken.

Grooming

The dog should be brushed weekly and make it bathe only when necessary. The rough coated dog needs hand stripping whereas the smooth and broken coated dogs need regular brushing. Check and clean the ears regularly in order to avoid the ear infections.

Shedding
