Cardigan belongs to the family of Basset Hound and Dachshund. The modern Cardigans came from their ancestors who were brought by Celtic tribes in Wales about 3000 years ago. Cardigans were used by their owners to protect their farms, and help in herding.

They are useful as guardian dogs, cattle dogs, vermin exterminators and family pets. Pembroke Welsh Corgi are a cross breed of original Corgi and Spitz dogs. History :

Cardigan Welsh Corgi were brought in Wales in 1200 BC. It is all rounder farm dog which was used for multiple purposes in Wales. They protected the homes and the farms of the owners besides doing other tasks.

The word Cor gi has been derived and translated as dwarf dog. They were also known as yard long dogs during the ancient times.

Health Issues :

Cardigans do not generally have any serious health issues. The most common death causes among these breed includes old age, neurological disorders and cancer.

They may get ill due to certain conditions and may get prone to disease such as progressive retinal atrophy and intervertebral disk disease.

It is important to check for symptoms and signs for any such disease. Regular check- up at least once or twice a year is compulsory to prevent any diseases.

Cardigan Welsh Corgis were initially used as farm dogs and for herding cattle and sheep. Their temperament includes alertness, intelligent, loving, affectionate, gentle, loyal etc.

Their sensitivity level is also high. Horse owners still prefer this breed as they are useful in herding the horses. Cardigans also try to herd people and small children which can be overcome by proper training.
