Pembroke Welsh Corgi

The Pembroke Welsh Corgi is one of the Welsh Corgi breeds which has its origin in Pembrokeshire, Wales. This belongs to a herding dog breed as it is once a herd dog and now it has become a good companion dog.

Appearance :

The Pembroke is has a fox shaped appearance with a triangular head, erect ears and oval shaped dark eyes. Generally, the Pembroke Welsh Corgis are born with small tail or no tail. The legs are short, sturdy and slightly rounded. They are double coated dogs with thick and short under coat and long haired outer coat. Some Pembrokes have long haired coat called fluffy coat while some doesn’t have it. They come in various coat colours like black & white, tan & white, red, fawn, black &tan, blue and sable.

The Pembroke is about 10 to 12 inches (25 to 30 cm) tall on an average. The Male Pembroke weighs about 24 to 31 lbs (10 to 14 kg) and female Pembroke weighs about 24 to 28 lbs (10 to 13 kg). The male Pembroke is litter heavier than female Pembroke.

Behaviour :

The Pembroke Welsh Corgi is highly active, smart, brave and playful breed. They are very loyal and obedient dogs. The Pembroke love to please the owner and they are stubborn and independent dogs. They are very alert and make good watch dogs. The Pembroke have good temperament towards children and other pets. The Pembrokes should be socialised well from the very young age to develop good behaviour towards other pets and people. They are extroverts and love outgoing with the owners.

Health Issues :

The Pembroke is prone to certain health issues because of their size. The most common health problems found in this breed are Hip Dysplasia, eye problems such as cataracts, Retinal Dysplasia, Progressive Retinal Atrophy, Von Willebrand’s disease, monorchidism, Degenerative Myelopathy, Obesity and disk problems. This breed of dogs is vulnerable to certain genetic health problems. So, it is advised to consult a vet if any serious health issues have risen.

Diet :

Pembroke loves to eat a lot which may lead to obesity problem, so do not over feed the dog. The diet plan should be strictly followed so that the dog doesn’t undergo any health problem. The diet should contain quality feed which comprise of meat, milk, drinking water, biscuits and dog food. The Pembroke needs about 2 cups of meal per day but mind that the amount of food is based on several factors like size, age and activity.

Habitat :

The Pembroke Welsh Corgi can adapt to any type of living condition. They are fine with apartment living and country living as well. It is mandatory that the pet meet the physical exercise requirements to keep the pet active and fit. They do well in any type of environment that is they are fine in cold weather as well as warm weather. But too extreme conditions of any weather type is not good for the pet.

Life Style :

They are very playful and like to accompany the children in games. As they are herding dogs, naturally they are protective and alert. The Pembroke should not be allowed to play in unfenced areas. They are not meant to left alone and love to be a part of the family. Although they are playful and active, Pembroke needs a lot of physical exercise and daily walk is compulsory. A daily walk and moderate physical exercise keeps the pet fit and healthy.

Life Cycle :

The Pembroke has good litter size and gives birth to 6-8 puppies on an average in one litter. Though the whelping process is natural but under the supervision of a vet the whelping process would be safe and healthy for the dogs.

Predators :

Protecting the dog from external dangers like larger dogs, bigger animals and dog thieves is necessary. Do not unleash the dog on daily walks or do not leave the dog alone in unfenced areas. As protective in nature they may get into fights with other animals they find harmful.

Life Span :

The average life expectancy of the Pembroke Welsh Corgi is about 12 to 15 years. Under good health conditions, the Pembroke could survive longer than the average life span.

Breeding :

At a proper age, around one to two years the Pembroke will be in suitable stage for breeding. It is recommended to take the pet for professional breeding as it is a healthy process. A professional breeder checks the pet’s health condition thoroughly and helps in healthy breeding.

Grooming :

Brush the coat regularly, remove the dead hair and loose hair prevent hair fall. Bathe the pet now and then as frequent bathing keeps the skin dry. The under coat is water-resistant so it is easy to groom. They don’t have very long hair so it doesn’t take much time to groom the coat. Brush the teeth regularly like twice in a week. Trim the nails, clean the ears inside thus preventing formation of wax and wipe the area surrounding the eyes with a wet cloth to keep them clean.

Shedding :

The Pembroke Welsh Corgi sheds twice in a year or annually. It sheds more than average but proper grooming prevents the pet from heavy shedding. Mostly the pet sheds in spring season and sometimes they shed in hot weather.
