Briquet Griffon Vendéen is a dog belonging to the country of France. It has a medium size build and was primarily bred for hunting by mixing Grand Griffon Vendéen with other smaller hunting dogs. It is the rarest among all the dogs of the Griffon Vendéen family.

The dog breed was on the brink of extinction during the second world war. This came to notice of a French dog show judge by the name of Hubert Dezamy who took upon himself to preserve the breed and his efforts bore fruits.

Diet :

Briquet Griffon Vendéen is very sensitive to diets and careful attention has to be paid to its food. Foods, specially processed dog foods, may cause an allergic reaction in the dog. Care must be taken while introducing a new food to the dog’s diet.

Habitat :

These dogs like to run free and roam about to their hearts content. Due to their high enthusiasm, an area to run loose such as a yard, is ideal for them. They will not do as well in apartments because of their daily exercise needs.

Lifestyle :

Briquet Griffon Vendéen were bred for hunting small game such as rabbits. These dogs used their noses to track the prey and have a very keen sense of smell. They are bound to get excited in an environment that has lots of different scents, especially if they are new to it. They also have high stamina and energy. Hence, these dogs require a very active lifestyle. The dog also needs to be trained from an early age in order to ensure that it obeys the commands of its owner.

Predators :

The dog has strong predatory instincts as it was raised to accompany on hunting small game. Its sensitive nose allows it to find the prey and its stamina and agility are high enough to allow it to pursue the target for long durations. They can hunt solo as well as in packs. The dog has hunting in its blood.

Breeding

The dog was primarily bred from Grand Griffon Vendéen and other small hunting dogs native to France. It was primarily developed to hunt smaller animals. It is purebred and belongs to the scent hound family. The litter size of a female belonging to the breed is 4 to 6.

Briquet Griffon Vendéen Appearance :

The appearance of the Briquet Griffon Vendéen is quite similar to its ancestor the Grand Griffon Vendéen but on a shorter scale. It has a medium sized and well-proportioned body structure. It has a short and narrow head with a firm nose and dark colored eyes. It has a strong and well-muscled yet light body. The double coat of the dog has long hairs and feels rough. The coat may be black, fawn or white with double or tricolored white or tan markings. The tail is short and attenuates towards the tip.

The dogs have a history of being prone to food and skin allergies. The allergy may be present in the dog when it was a pup or it may have surfaced in the adult life. The cause of these is primarily genetic though the environment in which the dog is brought up in also plays a role. Regular examinations by a vet are recommended. The breed also has witnessed other health related issues such as collie eye anomaly that may cause blindness, epileptic seizures, underperforming thyroid gland and deafness from birth.

Grooming :

The dog has a double coat of tangled hairs. A couple of brushing and combing sessions every week would set them right. The hair need not be trimmed and bathes are recommended only when the dog is dirty. The breed’s ears are prone to infections and attention must be paid to keep them clean. Trimming of nails and brushing of legs and tail is advised.

Shedding :

Notwithstanding the dense and messy looking coat of the breed, they do not shed. The dog requires low to average maintenance.

Behavior, Temperament & Personality :

The dogs have a calm and friendly demeanor and a pleasant bark supplementing their appeasing personality. Due to it being a hunter, the dog is an initiative taker and does not likes to be bossed around. Training from an early age is required in order to ensure that the dog knows its place in the household and always obeys the owner. Otherwise the dog is great for playing with and especially has a love for treats. The dog behaves well around other dogs and children.  Though if a small animal exists in the house, the dog should be supervised. Active socialization of the breed from an early age with other dogs and animals is highly recommended. It cherishes its play time with the family and is peppy and fun-loving.
